Chiang Mai -

On the first day of May or May Day, recognised globally as International Labour Day, honours the contributions, strength, and struggles of workers worldwide. Each year on this day, Northern labor networks, migrant communities, and labour rights organizations in Chiang Mai come together to call for workers’ rights.

This year’s event brought together hundreds of Chiang Mai-based workers and labor networks to share experiences, mobilize, and demand robust labor protections under the urgent theme “No Social Security, No Stability.” The goal was to address the widening gap between stagnant wages and the rising costs of living and environmental health.

The mobilization featured an advocacy march extending over 2 kilometers. Demonstrators and workers gathered at Putthasathant and walked to Chiang Mai Railway Park, highlighting urgent demands for labor rights, economic justice, and fair remuneration. Along the route, demonstrators held signs with poignant messages such as “One Hour’s Wage Is Less Than the Cost of One Cup of Coffee,” “Minimum Wage Must Be a Living Wage,” and “Living in a Country Where Environmental (Dust) Costs Outpace Wages.”

Around 300 people participated in the event, including a powerful showing of solidarity from Myanmar migrants and other international residents in Chiang Mai.
